Routes to Rhythm Show
An African and Caribbean Music & Dance Adventure
Routes to Rhythm is an electrifying performance led by master musicians from West Africa, accompanied by professional dancers. The show delves into the rich origins of West African music and dance, tracing their journey across the Atlantic to the Caribbean and their influence on UK carnival traditions today.
Running time: Full length 40 minutes or can be tailored to 20 or 30 minutes
The experience begins with a renowned griot and storyteller playing the kora and singing setting the stage for a musical voyage from West Africa. Two master drummers join him, filling the space with the powerful rhythms of the djembe. Dancers then take the stage, performing the breathtaking ‘flying scene’ with vibrant, flowing fabric.
Audiences are introduced to the dynamic tradition of call and response, actively engaging through movement and song. This interactive approach keeps them immersed in the performance. The balafon and calabashes make their appearance in the final West African dance piece before the beat transforms into a lively Caribbean rhythm. The narrative shifts to the evolution of these musical traditions in the Caribbean, culminating in the vibrant energy of Notting Hill Carnival with an exhilarating Soca dance display.
The grand finale unites audience and performers in a joyful celebration of rhythm and movement. The show concludes as the griot/storyteller reintroduces the kora, its mesmerizing melodies providing a graceful close while guiding the artists off-stage. Beyond entertainment, this immersive experience deepens audience's appreciation for the cultural heritage of African and Caribbean music and dance.
