Workshops
Participants will immerse themselves in the rhythms and cultural traditions of West African drumming. The workshop begins with an introduction to the history and cultural context of the djembe drum, including the oral traditions, social and ceremonial uses of the instrument, and its origins among the Malinke people.
The session then moves into practical exploration of djembe technique, where participants will learn the three main notes of the drum and how to produce them. This is followed by guided call-and-response introductions, progressing into the learning of basic and then more complex accompaniment patterns. African songs will be incorporated to complement the drumming and to reflect the communal nature of traditional West African music-making.
The session concludes with a reprise of all that has been learnt, gradually building tempo and energy towards a lively and joyful crescendo. Participants may also wish to get up and dance as part of the closing celebration.
By the end of the workshop, participants will:
- Gain an understanding of West African musical traditions and the cultural significance of the djembe drum.
- Develop foundational skills in djembe technique, including mastering the three primary notes.
- Learn to listen and play collaboratively within a group, developing teamwork and communication through rhythm.
- Experience the joy, mindfulness, and sense of connection that comes from shared music-making in a drum circle setting.
Workshops can also be combined with dance to highlight the deep connection between rhythm and movement.
All sessions are led by experienced, DBS-checked artists and facilitators.
